Rayy

Rayy was an ancient city in northern Iran, near modern Tehran, and a major centre on the Silk Road. Under the Seljuk Empire it was one of the cities, alongside Nishapur and Isfahan, from which sultans drew substantial revenue by taxing caravan traffic. It was devastated during the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century.
