Daylamites
The Daylamites were an Iranian people of Daylam, the highlands south-west of the Caspian Sea, famed as tough infantry and mercenaries. They resisted Arab rule for centuries and adopted Islam in the 9th and 10th centuries, often in its Zaydi form, through Alid missionaries. In the 10th century Daylamite dynasties, above all the Buyids, ruled much of Iran and Iraq.
