Hatay Province
Hatay is the southernmost province of Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast bordering Syria, with its capital at Antakya, ancient Antioch. As the Sanjak of Alexandretta it was part of French-mandated Syria until it became the autonomous Hatay State in 1938 and was annexed by Turkey in 1939, a transfer Syria long contested. It was severely damaged by the earthquakes of February 2023.
