Hecatomnid dynasty

c. 395–c. 326 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Hecatomnids

The Hecatomnid dynasty ruled Caria in south-west Asia Minor as satraps of the Persian Empire in the 4th century BCE. Founded by Hecatomnus of Mylasa, it reached its height under his son Mausolus, who moved the capital to Halicarnassus and extended Carian power over Rhodes and other islands; his tomb, the Mausoleum, gave its name to all such buildings. Ada, the last of the line, was confirmed in Caria by Alexander the Great.
