Heinrich Schliemann

1822–1890 · 19th century

Heinrich Schliemann was a German businessman and pioneering archaeologist who set out to prove the historical basis of Homer's epics. From 1871 he excavated Hisarlik in Turkey, identifying it as Troy, and in 1876 he found the shaft graves of Mycenae with their gold masks. His methods were destructive, but his discoveries opened the study of Aegean prehistory.
