Henry I, Duke of Brabant

1165–1235 · 13th century · Also known as Henry I of Brabant, Henry the Courageous

Henry I, Duke of Brabant, was the first ruler of the Louvain dynasty to use the title Duke of Brabant, reigning from 1183 to 1235. He founded towns, granted charters and expanded his lands between the Meuse and the Scheldt, though he was defeated by the Prince-Bishop of Liège at Steppes in 1213. His reign turned the old County of Louvain into the Duchy of Brabant, one of the leading principalities of the Low Countries.
