Hiempsal I

d. c. 117 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Hiempsal I was a Numidian prince, the younger son of King Micipsa, who inherited a share of the kingdom with his brother Adherbal and his cousin Jugurtha in 118 BCE. Quarrels over the division began almost at once, and Jugurtha had him murdered soon afterwards. His death began the conflict that drew Rome into the Jugurthine War.
