Hikayat Prang Sabi

19th century · 19th century

The Hikayat Prang Sabi, 'Tale of the Holy War', is an Acehnese epic poem calling believers to fight the unbelievers and promising the rewards of martyrdom. Its best-known version was composed in the 1880s, during the Aceh War against the Dutch, and is attributed to Teungku Chik Pantè Kulu. Recited among the fighters, it inspired resistance so effectively that the Dutch confiscated copies.
