Imjin War

1592–1598 · 16th century · Also known as Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598)

The Imjin War was the invasion of Korea by Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1592 and again in 1597. Japanese armies quickly took Seoul and Pyongyang, but Korean resistance, the navy of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and a large Ming Chinese intervention halted them; the Japanese withdrew after Hideyoshi's death in 1598, leaving Korea devastated.
