Iran–Iraq War
The Iran–Iraq War was fought from September 1980 to August 1988 after Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Iran, seeking control of the Shatt al-Arab and hoping to exploit the turmoil of the Iranian Revolution. After early Iraqi gains, Iran recovered its territory by 1982 and the war became a costly stalemate of trench warfare, chemical weapons and attacks on cities and oil tankers. It ended in a UN-brokered ceasefire without change of borders, with hundreds of thousands dead.
