Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke

1172–1220 · 13th century

Isabel de Clare was the daughter and heiress of Richard de Clare, called Strongbow, and Aoife, daughter of King Diarmait Mac Murchada of Leinster. Her marriage in 1189 to William Marshal brought him the lordship of Leinster and the earldom of Pembroke. She took an active part in governing her inheritance, and after his death in 1219 she managed her own lands until she died.
