Izz al-Din Mas'ud I

d. 1193 · 12th century · Also known as Mas'ud I of Mosul

Izz al-Din Mas'ud I was the Zengid atabeg of Mosul from 1180 to 1193, a nephew of Nur al-Din. He competed with Saladin for the leadership of the Zengid lands in Syria and northern Mesopotamia and withstood Saladin's sieges of Mosul. In 1186 he was forced to accept Ayyubid overlordship, keeping Mosul as a vassal. His descendants ruled Mosul until the minister Badr al-Din Lu'lu' took power.
