James Murray (governor of Quebec)

1721–1794 · 18th century

James Murray was a British Army officer who served under James Wolfe at the capture of Quebec in 1759 and defended the city in 1760. He became military governor of Quebec and, from 1764, the first civil governor of the British Province of Quebec. He quickly found plans to anglicise the French-speaking Catholic population impractical and favoured the Canadiens over British merchants, who secured his recall in 1766.
