James Robert Phillips

1863–1897 · 19th century · Also known as James Phillips

James Robert Phillips was a British colonial official, acting consul-general of the Niger Coast Protectorate. In January 1897 he led a small, largely unarmed party towards Benin City, intending to see the Oba, despite warnings to wait until a sacred festival had ended. The party was ambushed and Phillips and most of his companions were killed, which Britain used as the pretext for the Benin Expedition of 1897.
