Janke Waali

d. 1867 · 19th century · Also known as Janke Waali Sanneh

Janke Waali was the last mansaba, or paramount ruler, of the Mandinka Kaabu Empire in present-day Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. In 1867 the forces of the Fula state of Futa Jallon besieged his capital Kansala. Facing defeat, he had the gunpowder stores set alight, destroying the town, its defenders and many of the attackers. The fall of Kansala ended Kaabu as a major power, and griots still celebrate his last stand.
