Jean Chardin

1643–1713 · 17th century · Also known as Sir John Chardin

Jean Chardin was a French jeweller and traveller who made two long journeys to Safavid Persia between 1665 and 1677, passing through Mingrelia, Imereti and Georgia in 1672–1673. His account, published from 1686, is one of the most detailed European descriptions of Safavid Iran and of the western Georgian principalities. A Huguenot, he settled in London, where Charles II knighted him.
