Jean de Brébeuf

1593–1649 · 17th century

Jean de Brébeuf was a French Jesuit missionary who worked among the Huron (Wendat) from 1626, learning their language and writing a dictionary and catechism. He also visited the Neutral confederacy in 1640–1641. In 1649, when the Iroquois destroyed the Huron towns, he was captured at Saint-Louis and tortured to death. He is venerated as one of the Canadian Martyrs.
