Huron Confederacy

1440 CE – 1650 CE (approx.) · capital Ossossane

An alliance of Wendat nations between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay, the hub of the early French fur trade until Iroquois attacks dispersed it in 1649.

Origins

Wendat tradition holds that the Bear and Cord nations formed a league around 1440, joined by the Rock nation around 1590 and the Deer around 1610. Their country, Wendake or Huronia, lay in what is now Simcoe County, Ontario, where 20,000 to 30,000 people lived in palisaded villages of longhouses, among them Ossossane, the main town of the Bear.

Rule and society

A confederacy council of village and clan chiefs met to settle disputes and decide on war and trade, and the Feast of the Dead united communities through shared reburial of their dead. Women controlled fields of maize, beans and squash, whose surplus the Wendat traded north to Algonquian hunters for furs. Allied with New France from Champlain's visit in 1615, they hosted Jesuit missions, including Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, founded in 1639.

Decline and legacy

Epidemics in the 1630s halved the population, and in 1648 to 1649 the Iroquois Confederacy destroyed the main towns and killed missionaries such as Jean de Brébeuf. Survivors fled; some settled near Quebec, where Wendake survives, and others joined the Petun to become the Wyandot.
