Jebel Akhdar War

1954–1959 · 20th century · Also known as Jebel Akhdar rebellion

The Jebel Akhdar War was a conflict in Oman between the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and the Ibadi Imamate of Oman in the interior, led by Imam Ghalib ibn Ali. Disputes over oil exploration led Sultan Said bin Taimur, backed by Britain, to occupy Nizwa in 1955. The rebels held out on the Jebel Akhdar plateau until British special forces stormed it in 1959, ending the imamate.
