Ghalib Alhinai

1912–2009 · 20th century · Also known as Ghalib ibn Ali al-Hinai

Ghalib ibn Ali al-Hinai was the last Imam of Oman, elected in 1954 after the death of Muhammad al-Khalili. His attempts to win international recognition for the interior imamate, amid disputes over oil concessions, led to conflict with the Sultan of Muscat, who with British help occupied Nizwa in 1955. After the Jebel Akhdar War ended in 1959 he went into exile in Saudi Arabia, where he died.
