Joachim II Hector

1505–1571 · 16th century · Also known as Joachim II of Brandenburg

Joachim II Hector was elector of Brandenburg from 1535 to 1571, of the Hohenzollern dynasty. On his father's death the Hohenzollern lands were divided, with his brother John receiving the Neumark. Joachim introduced Lutheranism in Brandenburg in 1539 while keeping much Catholic ritual, built lavishly, and in 1569 secured a joint claim to the Duchy of Prussia, which later passed to Brandenburg.
