John of Capistrano

1386–1456 · 15th century · Also known as Saint John of Capistrano, Giovanni da Capestrano

John of Capistrano was an Italian Franciscan friar and preacher who campaigned across central Europe against the Hussites and for a crusade against the Ottomans. In 1456 he raised a crusading army of peasants and townsmen that, with John Hunyadi's forces, broke the Ottoman siege of Belgrade. He died of plague soon afterwards and was canonised in 1690.
