Justin II

c. 520–578 · 6th century

Justin II was Byzantine emperor from 565 to 578, nephew and successor of Justinian I. He refused payments to the Avars and Persia, and his reign saw the Lombard invasion of Italy in 568 and a renewed war with Persia in which the fortress of Dara fell in 573. After losing his sanity he made Tiberius II his co-ruler in 574. Embassies from the Nubian kingdoms reached Constantinople during his reign.
