Meroë
Meroe was an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile in present-day Sudan, the capital of the Kushite Empire from around the sixth century BCE. It was a centre of iron production and trade, famous for its pyramids. Meroe declined in the fourth century CE, as the rising Aksumite kingdom extended its power.
