Khevsurs

The Khevsurs are a Georgian highland people of Khevsureti, on the northern and southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus near the border with Chechnya. Living in fortified villages such as Shatili and keeping distinctive customs, dress and folk religion into the 20th century, they were long noted for their independence. Under the Kingdom of Kartli they served in the forces of the dukes of Aragvi.
