King James Version

1611 · 17th century · Also known as King James Bible, Authorized Version

The King James Version is the English translation of the Bible commissioned by James I and published in 1611 for use in the Church of England. It was prepared by around fifty scholars working in committees, drawing heavily on William Tyndale's earlier translation. Its language shaped English prose and literature for centuries, and it remained the standard English Bible for most Protestants until the twentieth century.
