Klaipėda
Klaipėda, historically called Memel, is Lithuania's third largest city and only seaport, at the mouth of the Curonian Lagoon on the Baltic. It grew from a castle founded by the Livonian Order in 1252 and belonged to Prussia for most of its history. Detached from Germany in 1920, it was taken by Lithuania in 1923, annexed by Nazi Germany in March 1939 and returned to Lithuania after the Second World War.
