Košice

Also known as Kassa, Kaschau

Košice, in Hungarian Kassa, is the second-largest city of Slovakia, in the east of the country. In the Kingdom of Hungary it was a leading royal free town and the chief city of Upper Hungary, with the Gothic Cathedral of St Elizabeth. It was a centre of the anti-Habsburg risings of Thököly and Rákóczi, and Francis II Rákóczi was reburied there in 1906.
