Kostis Palamas

1859–1943 · 20th century

Kostis Palamas was a Greek poet, a leading figure of the New Athenian School and of the movement to use spoken demotic Greek in literature. His major works include The Twelve Words of the Gypsy and The King's Flute. He wrote the words of the Olympic Hymn for the 1896 Athens Games, and his funeral in occupied Athens in 1943 became a patriotic demonstration.
