Kotoko Council
The Kotoko Council was the governing council of the Ashanti Empire, established at the empire's foundation around 1700. It brought together the paramount chiefs of the constituent Asante states, and its collective assent was required for major decisions such as war, treaties and the deposition of chiefs. It acted as an institutional check on the authority of the Asantehene.
