Lament for Ur

c. 2000 BCE, around the fall of Ur · 21st century BCE

The Lament for Ur, or Lamentation over the city of Ur, is a Sumerian lament composed around the time when Ur fell to the Elamites and its Third Dynasty came to an end, about 2000 BC. The dynasty had ruled for around a hundred years. Invading Elamites raided the temple treasury, the centre of power in Sumer moved to Isin, and control of Ur's trade passed to several leading families of the city.
