Legio III Gallica

c. 49 BCE–4th century CE · 4th century BCE

Legio III Gallica was a Roman legion probably raised by Julius Caesar around 49 BCE. It served in Mark Antony's Parthian campaign and was long stationed in Syria; moved to Moesia in 68 CE, it destroyed a raiding force of some 9,000 Roxolani horsemen there early in 69 before declaring for Vespasian in the civil war. It returned to the East and is still recorded in the fourth century.
