Leisler's Rebellion

1689–1691 · 17th century

Leisler's Rebellion was an uprising in colonial New York from 1689 to 1691, after news of the Glorious Revolution and the collapse of the Dominion of New England. The German-born merchant and militia captain Jacob Leisler seized control of the colony in the name of William and Mary and governed it for nearly two years. When a royal governor arrived in 1691, Leisler was tried for treason and executed.
