Leopold von Ranke

1795–1886 · 19th century

Leopold von Ranke was a German historian and a founder of modern source-based history. Teaching at Berlin, he insisted on the critical study of original documents to show the past "as it actually was", and wrote major histories of the popes, the Reformation and the European states. In 1858 he became the first chairman of the Historical Commission founded by Maximilian II of Bavaria.
