Linggadjati Agreement
The Linggadjati Agreement was a settlement negotiated in November 1946 at Linggadjati near Cirebon in West Java between the Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia, and signed in March 1947. The Dutch recognised the Republic's de facto authority over Java, Madura and Sumatra, and both sides agreed to form a federal United States of Indonesia within a Netherlands-Indonesian Union. Disputes over its meaning led to the first Dutch 'police action' in July 1947.
