Lorsch Pharmacopoeia

c. 795 · 8th century · Also known as Lorscher Arzneibuch

The Lorsch Pharmacopoeia is a medical manuscript written at Lorsch Abbey around 795, the oldest surviving book of medicine from the German-speaking lands. It gathers several hundred remedies drawn from classical and early medieval sources and defends the study of medicine as a Christian duty. It is kept in the State Library in Bamberg and is listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
