Louis the Younger

835–882 · 9th century · Also known as Louis III the Younger

Louis the Younger was king of East Francia from 876 to 882, a son of Louis the German. He ruled Saxony, Franconia and Thuringia and later Bavaria, and in 876 defeated his uncle Charles the Bald at Andernach when Charles tried to seize the western lands of his inheritance. He married Liutgard, daughter of the Saxon count Liudolf, and was buried, like his father, at Lorsch Abbey.
