Lower Brittany
Lower Brittany (Basse-Bretagne) is the western half of Brittany, where the Breton language was traditionally spoken, in contrast to Upper Brittany in the east, where Gallo and French prevailed. It covers roughly Finistère and the western parts of the Côtes-d'Armor and Morbihan. The language border between the two moved slowly westward from the ninth century onwards.
