fl. c. 540–524 BCE · 6th century BCE

Lygdamis was tyrant of the island of Naxos in the Cyclades in the mid-6th century BCE. A Naxian aristocrat, he helped Peisistratus regain power in Athens and in return received his help in seizing Naxos around 540 BCE. He began ambitious building works, including the great temple of Apollo whose gateway, the Portara, still stands, and was overthrown by the Spartans around 524 BCE.
