Maasina Rule

1944–1952 · 20th century · Also known as Marching Rule

Maasina Rule was a political and social movement on Malaita and other islands of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1944 to about 1952. Led by local chiefs and returning labourers from the wartime Labour Corps, it organised villages, codified custom and refused co-operation with the colonial government, which arrested its leaders in 1947. It is seen as a forerunner of Solomon Islands nationalism.
