Madhavrao I

1745–1772 · 18th century · Also known as Madhavrao Peshwa, Madhav Rao I

Madhavrao I (1745–1772) was Peshwa of the Maratha Empire from 1761 to 1772. Coming to office soon after the disaster of Panipat, he restored Maratha power in the Deccan and the north, defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad and led repeated campaigns against Hyder Ali of Mysore, forcing him to cede territory and pay tribute. His early death from tuberculosis at the age of twenty-seven weakened the Peshwa's government.
