Maputo
Maputo, known until 1976 as Lourenço Marques, is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, on Delagoa Bay in the far south of the country. A Portuguese trading post grew into a town that replaced Mozambique Island as the colonial capital in 1898, helped by the railway to the Transvaal opened in 1895. It became the capital of independent Mozambique in 1975.
