Marburg Colloquy

1529 · 16th century

The Marburg Colloquy was a meeting held at Marburg Castle in October 1529, called by Philip I of Hesse to unite the German and Swiss Reformers in a common Protestant alliance. Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Huldrych Zwingli and Johannes Oecolampadius agreed on most articles of faith but not on the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The failure left the Lutheran and Reformed traditions divided.
