Martyrdom of Arethas

6th century · 6th century · Also known as Martyrium Arethae

The Martyrdom of Arethas is a Greek hagiographical text describing the massacre of the Christians of Najran in 523 under the Himyarite king Yusuf and the Aksumite expedition against him. It centres on Arethas, the elderly leader of the Najran Christians, who was executed with many others. It was widely copied in Byzantium and became the basis of the saint's cult.
