Masjed Soleyman

Also known as Masjid-i-Suleiman, Masjed Soleiman

Masjed Soleyman is a city in Khuzestan province in south-western Iran, in the foothills of the Zagros on lands of the Bakhtiari tribes. On 26 May 1908 William Knox D'Arcy's syndicate struck oil there, the first commercial oil discovery in the Middle East, which led to the founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1909. The town grew up as an oil-company settlement.
