Matala
Matala is a village and bay on the south coast of Crete, Greece, west of the Mesara plain. In antiquity it served as a harbour for Phaistos and later for Gortyn. The sandstone cliffs above its beach are honeycombed with artificial caves, cut as tombs in the Roman period, which became famous as a hippie colony in the 1960s.
