Mathurin-Léonard Duphot

1769–1797 · 18th century

Mathurin-Léonard Duphot was a French general of the Revolutionary Wars who served under Napoleon in Italy. In December 1797 he was shot by papal troops during a riot outside the French embassy in Rome. His death gave the French Directory a pretext to occupy Rome under General Berthier and proclaim the Roman Republic in February 1798.
