Matthew III Csák

c. 1260–1321 · 13th century

Matthew III Csák was a Hungarian magnate who built a vast domain in the north-west of the kingdom, largely in present-day Slovakia, as royal power collapsed around 1300. From his seat at Trenčín he ruled almost as an independent prince. He resisted Charles I of Anjou, whose victory at Rozgony in 1312 weakened his allies, and his domain broke up after his death in 1321.
