Maurice Dunand

1898–1987 · 20th century

Maurice Dunand was a French archaeologist who directed the excavations at Byblos in Lebanon for about half a century from 1925. Working layer by layer across the site, he uncovered remains from the Neolithic to the Crusader period, including the Temple of the Obelisks, which he dismantled and rebuilt nearby. His publications, Fouilles de Byblos, are the basic record of the city's archaeology.
