Maurice (emperor)

murdered 602 CE · 7th century

Maurice was a Byzantine emperor who reigned from 582 until 602. He helped restore Khosrow II to the Sasanian throne, securing peace with Persia. His murder by the usurper Phocas in 602 gave Khosrow II a pretext for a long war against the Byzantines that exhausted both empires and weakened the Sasanian Empire.
